The construction materials industry is a major user of the world’s resources. While enormous progress has been made towards sustainability, the scope and opportunities for improvements are significant. To further the effort for sustainable development, a conference on Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies was held at Coventry University, Coventry, U.K., from June 11th - 13th, 2007, to highlight case studies and research on new and innovative ways of achieving sustainability of construction materials and technologies. This book presents selected, important contributions made at the conference. Over 190 papers from over 45 countries were accepted for presentation at the confere...

Revised and updated, this second edition of Cathodic Protection of Steel in Concrete and Masonry covers both reinforced concrete and masonry structures, describes in detail the overall design factors involved in cathodic protection (CP), and also provides a theoretical basis for why it works. It refers to the new European standard EN 12696 for cathodic protection where relevant. What’s new in the Second Edition: Updates techniques and methods Includes applications to new materials, and new examples Considers the virtues and drawbacks of CP Gives guidance on new practices, standards and their suitability Cathodic Protection of Steel in Concrete and Masonry, Second Edition describes the CP s...

The New Engineering Contract

The introduction of the New Engineering Contract (NEC) encourages a systematic approach to contracting which is multidisciplinary in nature and fully interlocked in form. The NEC is intended by its supporters to be more flexible and easier to use than any current leading traditional standard forms of contract. It is believed that these features reduce adversariality and disputes. The NEC seeks to achieve this aim primarily through co-operative management techniques and incentives built into the NEC's procedures. This commentary analyses and evaluates these and related claims of innovation. The New Engineering Contract: A legal commentary examines the background to the NEC, its design objecti...

Transport Properties of Concrete

Transport Properties of Concrete covers how to measure the ability of ions and fluids to move through concrete material, and how to use the results to model performance. These transport properties largely determine the durability of concrete and of steel embedded within it, as well as the effectiveness of structures such as landfill containment barriers. The book begins by explaining in detail what transport properties are and how to write computer models for transport processes. Early chapters present and explain computer models written in basic code. Coverage then proceeds to a wide range of tests for the transport properties of concrete, and methods for calculating the values for these pr...

Concrete Materials

"Concrete is a construction material composed of cement as well as other cementitious materials such as fly ash and slag cement, aggregate, water, and chemical admixtures. Concrete is used more than any other man-made material in the world. This book presents current research on a wide variety of materials that enhance the properties and performance of concrete as well as new recycling technologies. Research is presented on the potential of using of recycled gypsum in cementitious products. Concrete encasements are also used in the storage of radionuclide waste and research is included on the long-term performance of concrete wasteforms. Problems that occur with the oxidation of steel in reinforced concrete structures, which poses serious durability problems, are addressed and the maintenance of these structures, which requires costly-to-rectify solutions are looked at. This book also presents results of tests using Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer bars as a potential alternative material to the traditional steel.
